Ashley Mortensen and her son, Tanner, watch the approach of the USS Harpers Ferry during the departure of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit from Sand Diego Feb. 12, 2016. Her husband, 2nd Lt. Dale Mortensen from Seattle, a logistics officer, deployed with the 13th MEU as part of the Battalion Landing Team, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, I Marine Expeditionary Force. The 13th MEU is capable of conducting amphibious operations, crisis response and limited contingency operations and is beginning an estimated six month deployment to the Western Pacific and Middle East.
