Soldiers, volunteers and staff flooded the area surrounding the Sunset Station here Jan. 8. Army displays, simulators, weapons, vehicles and more accompanied by chaperones clad in camouflage lined the sidewalks near the Alamodome kicking off what is considered here The Go Army Experience. The public event is part of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl week and provides the Army a platform to engage local communities, support the development of America’s future leaders and allow Americans the opportunity to better understand how the Army tackles some of the toughest challenges that face our nation. “I love getting to be out here with the kids showing them more of what the Army is about. Events like these are great because getting a chance to see everything hands-on really broadens the perspective these kids have about the Army,” said Sgt. 1st Class Bob Payne, an Army exhibitor. Thousands of people came out to interact with the Soldiers and their equipment. “Having all of this equipment out here really gives the kids a feel of what a Soldier might have to deal with on a day-to-day basis,” said Maj. Dennis Mackin, assistant product control manager for fire control grenade launchers and electromagnetic weapons. Retired Sgt. Maj. Ansley Harris brought his junior ROTC class from Wagner High School down to check out the event. “We’re trying to teach these kids the importance of volunteering and giving back to the community, and this event is a perfect example because it really shows the benefit of what a team can accomplish when they come together and donate their time,” said Harris. The AAB events showcase the many options and opportunities available through Army service. Whether it’s active duty or Reserve, all of these components make up a winning organization – an organization that makes a difference at home and abroad.
