    Gary McDonald, a 60-year-old Yankton, S.D., native, holds the Coast Guard Silver Lifesaving medal certificate alongside Master Chief Petty Officer Ryan Fahlenkamp, the Coast Guard 8th District Command Master Chief (left) and Capt. Martin Malloy, Commander, Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River. McDonald received the medal for his part in the rescue of a 6-year-old-girl and her grandmother, Dec. 16, 2015. Gary McDonald, his brother Kevin McDonald and Doug Stockholm received the Coast Guard Silver Lifesaving medal for their heroic actions on July 7, 2011. After noticing a woman and a girl floating in the strong current of the flooded lake, they swam to them and spent the next 30 minutes battling strong currents to get the pair to safety.
