Gunnery Sgt. Miguel Cortes, chief drill instructor, Golf Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, waits for a recruit to respond to a knowledge question during a series commander inspection at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Dec. 7. Recruits are expected to answer questions with confidence, even if they forget the answers. There are three inspections the recruits experience before they participate in a battalion commander inspection at the end of training as Marines. Today, all males recruited west of the Mississippi are trained at MCRD San Diego. The depot is responsible for training more than 16,000 recruits annually. Golf Company is scheduled to graduate Jan. 8.
