Sergeant Jordan M. Holkey, drill instructor, Golf Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, inspects a recruit’s M16-A4 Service Rifle during a series commander inspection at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Dec. 7. Drill instructors search for carbon that builds up on the recruits’ rifles over time. Recruits are given a significant amount of time to clean their rifles every day, if they decide to. Today, all males recruited west of the Mississippi are trained at MCRD San Diego. The depot is responsible for training more than 16,000 recruits annually. Golf Company is scheduled to graduate Jan. 8.
