Gunnery Sgt. Miguel Cortes, chief drill instructor, Golf Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, quizzes a recruit on his knowledge during a series commander inspection at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Dec. 7. Drill instructors test recruits to see how much knowledge they’ve absorbed so far in recruit training. Recruits take part in a series of classes to learn about such things as the history of the Marine Corps and uniform standards. Today, all males recruited west of the Mississippi are trained at MCRD San Diego. The depot is responsible for training more than 16,000 recruits annually. Golf Company is scheduled to graduate Jan. 8.
