Sgt. Lewis A. Velasquez, drill instructor, Receiving Company, Support Battalion, corrects a recruit for not following directions during receiving at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Nov. 9. Although recruits are confused and disoriented during this portion of training, the chaos serves a purpose during the transformation from civilian to Marine. Today, all males recruited from west of the Mississippi are trained at MCRD San Diego. The depot is responsible for training more than 16,000 recruits annually. Lima Company is scheduled to graduate Feb. 5.
