Seaman James Raper, mineman, pushes the mine neutralization vehicle of the mine counter-measures ship USS Defender into its cradle. The MNV had just been retrieved from the sea. An MNV is a remote-controlled, unmanned submarine that uses a video camera to confirm the presence of underwater mines. Once confirmed the MNV can also be used to neutralize (render harmless) a mine. Defender is participating in exercise Clear Horizon, an annual exercise conducted with the Republic of Korea Navy, that is one of the largest, international, mine counter-measures exercises in the world. USS Guardian, USS Patriot, CH-53 mine-hunting helicopters from Helicopter Mine Counter-Measures Squadron 14, and several minesweepers from the Republic of Korea navy are also participating in the exercise, which takes place Nov. 22 to Nov. 26. Defender, home ported in San Diego,, is deployed to the 7th Fleet area of responsibility.
