U.S. Army Spc. Austin Jones, an engineer from the South Carolina National Guard's 1782nd Engineer Company from Lancaster, S.C., directs the delivery of a load of fill material with Spc. Dermaine Cherry, from the same unit, as their unit repairs a section of Whitehouse Road, near the Richland Wastewater Treatment Plant in Columbia, Oct. 13, 2015. The recent historic flood in S.C. caused washouts and severe damage to transportation infrastructure all across the Midlands, requiring much-needed rapid repairs by engineer units to assist counties and restore normal operations. The South Carolina National Guard has been activated to support state and county emergency management agencies and local first responders as historic flooding impacts counties statewide. There are 2,200 National Guard assets on the ground, which includes engineer support from neighboring North Carolina, and more than 40 State Guard members supporting state flood response efforts.
