Paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division and 173rd Airborne Brigade visit a memorial near Nijmegen, the Netherlands, Sept. 17, which honors the Americans who sacrificed their lives as part of the Waal River crossing during Operation Market Garden in 1944. This year, nearly 1,000 paratroopers from the U.S., U.K., the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Poland participated in a weeklong series of events commemorating the 71st Anniversary of Operation Market Garden, the allied offensive in World War II that included the largest airborne operation in history.
