Navy Cmdr. William Brunner, Expeditionary Medical Facility surgeon, and Army Lt. Col. Heather Serwon, right, veterinarian of Combined Joint Task Force - HOA's 353rd Civil Affairs Functional Specialty Team, perform surgery on Hektor, a Djiboutian K-9 working dog, on the operating table in the EMF, Oct. 23. At the head of the patient, Navy Capt. John Shapira, an EMF anesthesiologist, monitors Hektor while Petty Officer 3rd Class Joeben Estacio, hospital corpsman, with CJTF-HOA's EMF, dispenses surgical instruments. Hektor's surgery is to test for cancer due to an abnormality. The surgeons neuter Hektor to prevent future surgeries. Brunner is a native of Woodstock, N.Y., and deployed from Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, Calif. Serwon is a native of Kansas City, Kan., and deployed from Pacific Northwest District Veterinary Command, Fort Lewis, Wash. Shapira is deployed from Naval Medical Center, San Diego, Calif.
