150827-N-ZF498-164 U.S. 5TH FLEET AREA OF OPERATIONS (August 27, 2015) –The guided-missile destroyer USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98) fires its MK-45 5-inch/54-caliber lightweight gun during a live-fire weapons exercise. The lightweight gun provides combatant vessels with accurate gunfire against surface contacts, air threats and shore targets. Forrest Sherman is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations as part of Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, strike operations in Iraq and Syria as directed, maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the region.
