Durward Swanson, Army Air Force veteran, autographs a B-17 model aircraft during a reception Aug. 21at the Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins, Ga. Swanson arrived at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii in 1939. Surviving the attack on Pearl Harbor and Hickam, he went on to fly the B-17 into the Battle of Midway. He has received the Distinguished Flying Medal and a Bronze Star. The reception in honor of veterans who served aboard B-17s was held in celebration of the arrival of the B-17 Flying Fortress to the museum. The engines, wings and tail section of the aircraft arrived a day earlier and were on display during the reception. Several B-17 crew members offered their memories of the aircraft during the event attended by about 200 people. (U.S. Air Force photo by Tommie Horton)
