    6th Marine Corps District

Lt. Gen. Richard Mills presents a Certificate of Status and Congressional Gold Medal to Addie Reed, the wife of Montford Point Marine Cpl. Thomas N. Reed, during the 50th Anniversary of the Montford Point Marines Association Aug. 12, 2015, at the Renaissance Riverview Plaza Hotel in Mobile, Alabama. More than 20,000 Montford Point Marines enlisted during a time of segregation between 1942 and 1949, which paved the way for integration in the armed forces and, ultimately, the United States of America. Congress signed Executive Order 9981 awarding the Montford Point Marines with the highest civilian honor, the Congressional Gold Medal, and Certificate of Status for their contributions and achievements in their time of service. Mills is the commanding general of Marine Corps Forces Reserve. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Diamond N. Peden/Released)
