Drill Instructor Staff Sgt. Mario Powers, Platoon 1080, Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, waits for his first encounter with his new recruits July 25, 2015, on Parris Island, S.C. Although the recruits were under the supervision of other drill instructors since their arrival on Parris Island several days earlier, Powers, 33, from Tacoma, Wash., and his fellow drill instructors will be with them every moment for the next 12 weeks. Charlie Company is scheduled to graduate Oct. 16, 2015. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
