Gunnery Sgt. Joshua S. Smith and other Marines from C Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment performed vehicle check points and general patrols in the Khandari area. The Marines worked hand-in-hand with Iraqi police to fight the insurgent activities in the city. This marked the first time the Iraqi police have patroled the area since the battalion took it over.
