The U.S. Agency for International Development is helping the government of Nepal construct a road through one of the most isolated areas of this mountain kingdom. The all-weather, gravel highway will bring social, economic, and educational benefits to a region of Nepal which has had little contact with the outside world. American engineer William Niese is the AID adviser for the project which will be completed in June of 1973. The road will open the way for schools, power stations, factories and saw mills. It will mean lower costs for food and other necessities. The United States has so far contributed $906,000 and by the time the road is completed, will have spent a total of $3.5 million in Nepalese rupees, funds generated by the sale of U.S. government-owned food-stuffs in Nepal. These Nepalese children carry fill dirt for road construction. The new road project has made work available to many people in the area and even children are eager to work in this developing country.
