A student emerges from the Shallow Water Initial Motor Memory Egress Release exercise at the Aviation Survival Training Center in Jacksonville, Fla. The SWIMMER uses reference points to teach aviators how to navigate out of downed aircraft in shallow water. Even in shallow water, it is challenging for students to orient themselves underwater.
