Lance Corporal John Shepherd, a rifleman with 2nd Platoon, Charlie Co., 1st Battalion and native of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, conducts close-quarters training (CQT) aboard the USS San Antonio LPD 17 en route from New York City to Europe for operation BALTOPS May 26-June 6 2015. BALTOPS is an annual exercise that provides the opportunity for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and regional partners to strengthen inoperability through a series of tactical maneuvers and scenarios. The exercise involves Marines, Sailors, Airmen, and Soldiers of participating nations working side-by-side to enhance each other’s tactics and expertise, both on land and sea.
