Soldiers from the U.S. Army Europe Band watch as French students release balloons following a memorial ceremony June 4, 2015, in Picauville, France. Picauville hosted the memorial commemoration to honor the sacrifices of the Airmen and Soldiers who died when their aircraft crashed in Picauville overnight June 5 and 6, 1944. More than 600 French residents, WWII veterans, and service members from the United States, France and Germany attended the ceremony. Over 380 U.S. service members from Europe and affiliated D-Day historical units are participating in the 71st anniversary as part of Joint Task Force D-Day 71. The Task Force, based in Saint Mere Eglise, France, is supporting local events across Normandy, June 2-8, 2015, to commemorate the selfless actions by all the allies on D-Day that continue to resonate 71 years later.
