Seaman Alan Gadire, of the Coast Guard Cutter Aspen, homeported in San Francisco, uses an oxyacetylene torch to heat the pin of a shackle during the "Heat and Beat" challenge Thursday, Aug. 13, as part of the West Coast Aids to Navigation Olympics. During the challenge, four team members race to heat up the pin of a shackle and beat it with sledge hammers to secure the pin to the shackle. In conjunction with regional training and professional development, ship crews and ATON teams competed to test their seamanship and buoy-deck operating skills in a series of events.
