Lance Cpl. John Dickson, a mortarman with 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, loads a 60mm mortar round while his partner aims in at the hand-held position during a live-fire mortar range aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C., April 21-22, 2015. To ensure their readiness, these mortarmen practice their proficiency with the 60mm and 81mm mortar systems about once a month. In a deployed environment, these two weapon systems are key assets to the infantry because of their ability to suppress the enemy in a timely and effective manner due to its firepower and mobility.
