U.S. Navy veteran Bill Cain, 90, who was a machinist’s mate on the USS Mississippi in World War II, signs in with Upstate Honor Flight in the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport for his trip to Washington to see the National World War II Memorial, April 21, 2015. “I was 17 on Oct. 23, 1941, and I took my oath in Pittsburgh on Nov. 12. The war broke out and they cut boot camp short and sent us to Hampton Roads, Va. They mustered us on the dock and started calling names of which ship you were going to. We left for the Pacific after the first of the year and that was it,” he reflected. Aboard the Mississippi, he went on to fight in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, widely considered to be the largest naval battle in history. “I’ve never been [to the WWII Memorial]. It took them quite a while to get one built, but I’m looking forward to it.” (U.S. Army photo by Ken Scar)
