Armed Forces of the Philippines Army Pfc. Oliver Clerigo, assigned to the 552nd Engineer Construction Battalion, and U.S. Navy Builder Constructionman Kevin Syrdyk, assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 5, help place a roof truss at Don Joaquin Artuz Memorial Elementary School in Tapaz, Philippines, during Balikatan 2015, April 17. The engineers, along with U.S. Marines from the 9th Engineer Support Battalion, are constructing two classrooms at the school as part of a Combined-Joint Civil-Military Operations Task Force on the island of Panay. Balikatan, which means “shoulder to shoulder” in Filipino, is an annual bilateral training exercise aimed at improving the ability of Philippine and U.S. military forces to work together during planning, contingency, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.
