Petty Officer 1st Class Thomas Sayman, of Columbus, Ohio, demonstrates how to put on a cold-water immersion suit, or “Gumby suit,” quickly and accurately, under the supervision of Petty Officer 1st Class Charles Conley, of Newport News, Va., a fellow instructor at the Coast Guard’s North Pacific Regional Fisheries Training Center, Sept. 12, 2014. Fishermen sailing in the frigid waters of the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska are required to have access to, and know how to put on, immersion suits, which keep wearers warm, dry, and afloat, should they be washed overboard or have to abandon ship. Coast Guard maritime law enforcement personnel preparing to enforce fisheries laws in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska spend a week training at NPRFTC, where the course includes fishery and gear regulations, fish species identification, types of Alaska fishing vessels, forms and documentation, and practical training on every stage of a fisheries law enforcement boarding.
