Petty Officer 1st Class Jaysen Cobb, of New Portland, Maine, an instructor at the Coast Guard’s North Pacific Regional Fisheries Training Center, demonstrates operation of the flow scale, required aboard certain fish catcher/processor vessels and motherships in Alaska to weigh their catch at sea in order to stay within authorized catch limits, Sept. 12, 2014. NPRFTC works closely with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to train Coast Guard boarding officers how to inspect the flow scale while conducting at-sea fisheries boardings in Alaska. NPRFTC’s flow scale was invaluable to NOAA authorities as they researched and successfully prosecuted three civil enforcement cases involving manipulation of flow scales aboard fishing vessels, resulting in a $1.75 million settlement. Through fisheries law enforcement boardings in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska, Coast Guard boarding officers ensure the sustainability of Alaska’s $2 billion fishing industry.
