Airman James Coleman, of Las Cruces, N.M. (r.), and Petty Officer 3rd Class Haran Ellis, of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., attempt to identify one of the fish species found and caught in Alaskan waters, while Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathaniel Cassar, of Lexington, N.C., checks their answer, during a training course at the Coast Guard’s North Pacific Regional Fisheries Training Center, Sept. 11, 2014. While many fish species look very similar, each species typically has unique catch regulations, so correctly identifying the species is critical for Coast Guard boarding teams enforcing fisheries laws in the Bering Sea and elsewhere. Prior to conducting a patrol to enforce fisheries laws in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska, Coast Guard boarding teams spend a week training at NPRFTC, where the course includes fishery and gear regulations, fish species identification, types of Alaska fishing vessels, forms and documentation, and practical training on every stage of a fisheries law enforcement boarding.
