Petty Officer 1st Class Jeremy Vuylsteke (r.), of Dundee, Ore., and fellow boarding team member, Petty Officer 1st Class Kristofor Heilman, of Craig, Colo., review a fishing vessel’s legal documentation during a simulated fisheries boarding at the Coast Guard’s North Pacific Regional Fisheries Training Center, under the guidance of their instructor (center), Petty Officer 1st Class Jaysen Cobb, of New Portland, Maine, Sept. 11, 2014. Prior to conducting a patrol to enforce fisheries laws in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska, Coast Guard boarding teams spend a week training at NPRFTC, where the course includes fishery and gear regulations, fish species identification, types of Alaska fishing vessels, forms and documentation, and practical training on every stage of a fisheries law enforcement boarding. Coast Guard law enforcement officers help ensure the sustainability of Alaska’s $2 billion dollar fishing industry.
