Rct. Deanna F. Williams, a 22-year-old native of Lynchburg, Va., is currently training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in hopes of earning the title United States Marine. Williams is training with Platoon 4017, Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate May 15, 2015. “I joined because I wanted self-confidence,” said Williams, a 2010 graduate of Heritage High School in Lynchburg, Va. “I wanted to be independent. [In the Marines] you have to be a leader. If you aren’t independent and confident, no one will follow you.” Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Pfc. Vanessa Austin)
