First Lt. Ryan J. Moore is hoisted towards the ceiling in a makeshift harness during a demonstration at the Mountain Warfare Training Camp March 16 in Pohang, Republic of Korea. During the camp the U.S. Marines learned a variety of special knots used in rappelling and mountain operations. This knot, called the ‘Alpine basket,’ allows for an injured person to be lowered safely down the side of a mountain or cliff with only a piece of rope. Moore, from Amesbury, Massachusetts, is an 81-millimeter mortar platoon commander with 3rd Marine Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment currently assigned to 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, under the unit deployment program.
