Petty Officer 3rd Class Jacob Samis, assigned to Amphibious Construction Battalion 2, heaves on a steady line used to maneuver a pontoon section used as the beginning platform of an elevated causeway system during the exercise Joint Logistics Over the Shore 09. JLOTS is a critical capability that allows the military to move forces and supplies without the benefit of a fixed, deep-draft port. The exercise will demonstrate the Navy, Army and Marine Corps ability to deploy, discharge and conduct reception and staging of equipment in a scenario that requires ships to offload while still offshore.
