“Kama,” or scythe-like tools, rest on a tarp before being used to cut “hijiki,” a type of seaweed, from the ocean floor March 4 during the Hijiki Harvest at Camp Courtney, Okinawa. Harvesters bring kama along with baskets and bags to collect hijiki. Many residents look forward to the Courtney harvest because hijiki is scarce in other areas of Okinawa due to overharvesting. The first day of this year’s harvest drew over 250 residents. Hijiki is nutrient-dense and rich with iron. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Royce Dorman/Released)
