Staff Sgt. Jason Mabe, a motor transport maintenance chief with 2nd Radio Battalion, visits with the Smithson family before presenting them with the Mameluke sword that once belong to 2nd Lt. Paul W. Smithson, at the Officers Club aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C., March 10, 2015. Mabe shared the story of how he found the sword while on duty in 2013 and the journey he went through in order to have the sword returned to the family. Mabe discovered during his search for the sword’s owner that it had once belonged to 2nd Lt. Smithson, who was killed in action during the Vietnam War, and set out to identify the family of Smithson so that he could give the sword to its rightful owners. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl.
