150225-N-BD107-031 SAN DIEGO (Feb. 25, 2015) The amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), part of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) which included nearly 4,500 Sailors and Marines, returned to its homeport of San Diego after a seven-month deployment to the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of operations. During the deployment, the ARG transited nearly 35,000 nautical miles and conducted air strikes against the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL).
