Staff Sgt. William Pierce, a bass guitarist with Marine Band San Diego and 27-year-old native of Owensboro, Kentucky, performs during a concert for Central Washington University students in Ellensburg, Washington Feb. 17, 2015. Following an intensive audition and screening process, Marine Band enlistees attend recruit training and Marine Combat Training. Next, they attend a six-month basic music course at the Armed Forces School of Music in Norfolk, Virginia, where they study theory, ear training, private instrumental lessons, ensemble instruction and marching techniques. When their initial training is complete, they are assigned to one of 12 field bands in the continental U.S., Hawaii or Japan.
