Ashes are scattered about the forest floor at Poinsett Electronic Combat Range, Sumter, S.C., Jan. 28, 2015. The prescribed burns help enhance the timber and wildlife habitat by allowing the native longleaf pines to flourish which enhances the habitat of the Red-cockaded Woodpecker, an endangered species.
