I discovered the shredded remains of a “puppy pad” in the hallway of my apartment after my then three month-old chocolate lab and Brittany spaniel mix, Casey Behringer, no longer had use for it in January 2015 in Spring Lake, N.C. When Casey chews or shreds something, his conscience will take over when my husband, Roger, or I discover the damage. Usually just asking Casey, “Did you do this?” will create a reaction of guilt, hopefully deterring the behavior. (U.S. Army photo by Spc. Paige Behringer, 10th Press Camp Headquarters)
