Fort de Mutzig's original bread oven is still present and in remarkable shape 121 years after the fort was built. The oven was capable of producing enough bread to feed daily all 7,000 of its German defenders during the time of its use at the end of the 19th and early part of the 20th centuries. Fort de Mutzig's German builders were worried that a standard oven would be damaged by artillery concussions shaking the ground should the fort ever be attacked, so an oven designed for German battleships was installed as a suitable substitution.
