Lt. Col. Kurt Schaecher, left, a Bettendorf, Iowa, native and a lab operations manager for the U.S. Army Research Institute of Infectious Disease, tells Soldiers of the 36th Engineer Brigade about the history of the lab facility at the Liberian Institute for Biomedical Research during an Operation United Assistance mission, Dec. 6, 2014, Monrovia, Liberia. Schaecher said the facility used to be a human autoimmune virus and hepatitis vaccine research facility for a private pharmaceutical company, but now its used to test blood samples from suspected Ebola patients. Operation United Assistance is a Department of Defense operation in Liberia to provide logistics, training and engineering support to U.S. Agency for International Development-led efforts to contain the Ebola virus outbreak in western Africa.
