Rct. Thomas Dodson, an 18-year-old native of Anniston, Ala., is currently training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in hopes of earning the title United States Marine. Dodson is training with Platoon 2097, Hotel Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate Dec. 12, 2014. “When I was 13, I met a soldier who, at the time, was dating my sister. I idolized him,” said Dodson, who graduated from Ranburne High School in 2014. “He was put together, and I wanted to be just like him. One day, he expressed to me that if he could re-do his military career, he would have joined the Marine Corps due to their discipline and motivation. I took what he said to heart, and when I turned 17, I sought out recruiters to take the first steps to becoming a Marine.” Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. Vaniah Temple)
