Rct. Nirisi Chavez, an 18-year-old native of Dangriga, Belize, is currently training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in hopes of earning the title United States Marine. Chavez is training with Platoon 2098, Hotel Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate Dec. 12, 2014. “When I turned 16, I had the pleasure to meet my best friend’s uncle,” said Chavez, who graduated from Ecumenical High School in June 2013. “He was a dedicated Marine who only spoke highly of the Corps. He motivated me to do better for myself and family. I was raised with little financial means. After high school, I moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., to live with my aunt so I could join the Marine Corps and help provide for my family back in Belize.” Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. Vaniah Temple)
