The first wave of runners begin the half marathon distance race during the inaugural memorial race honoring Sgt. Pernell J. Herrera. Herrera passed away while on deployment to Afghanistan with New Mexico National Guard's Charlie Company 1-171st Aviation Regiment. The race commemorates the life and spirit of this fallen hero.
