Members of the Applied Physics Laboratory Ice Station clear ice from the hatch of the Los Angeles-class submarine USS Annapolis after the sub broke through the ice while participating in Ice Exercise 2009 in the Arctic Ocean. Annapolis and the Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Helena are participating in ICEX to operate and train in the challenging and unique environment that characterizes the Arctic region.
