President Barack Obama, left front, and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, left rear, exchange greetings with U.S. service members and thank them for their service in a corridor at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., Oct. 8, 2014. Obama met with Hagel and U.S. military combatant commanders at the Pentagon to discuss the ongoing fight against extremists known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Obama authorized humanitarian aid deliveries to Iraq as well as targeted airstrikes to protect U.S. personnel from ISIL. U.S. Central Command directed the operations.
