Capt. (select) Jay A. Kadowaki, left, addresses approximately 500 people as he assumes command of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Corona, making him the first officer of Asian/Pacific Islander heritage to head the command. Kadowaki, a Naval Academy graduate and descendent of Japanese immigrants who left Japan after World War II, relieved Capt. Robert A. Shafer, right, who is retiring from the Navy after 28 years of naval service. NSWC Corona, a Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) science and engineering field activity, is one of the most diverse workforces of NAVSEA's 12 warfare center divisions. Twenty-two percent of the workforce is women and 36 percent are minorities. Navy diversity policy not only includes the categories of race and gender but also an individual's background, culture, disabilities and experience that can enhance mission readiness.
