Seaman Alex Case, from Cramerton, N.C., uses a set of high-powered binoculars to observe a Chinese navy vessel from the bridge of the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Sterett (DDG 104). Sterett is underway in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility as part of the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group. Carl Vinson and its embarked air wing, Carrier Air Wing 17, are on deployment in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations supporting Valiant Shield. Valiant Shield is a U.S.-only biennial exercise in which participation will focus on the integration of joint training among U.S. forces.
