The rank of Chief Petty Officer was established April 1, 1893. A chief combination cover rests upon a shadow box during a chief pinning ceremony held on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. The gold fouled anchor is the emblem of a Navy Chief Petty Officer and attached to the anchor is a chain with the letters – USN. To the novice, the anchor, chain and letters only identify a chief petty officer, but to a chief, these symbols have a more noble and glorious meaning, unity, service and navigation.
