Lance Cpl. Jonathon Johnson, a landing support specialist with Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force South, and a native of Bristol, Tenn., completed a combat lifesaver course aboard the future amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6), Aug. 1, 2014. The Marines were taught several different lifesaving techniques over a three-day period, and were tested during a final exercise in order to receive their certification. Certified Combat lifesavers are trained to provide initial medical aid for their unit in combat situations. The Marines who received their certifications will bring their skills ashore during upcoming bi-lateral exercises with the Brazilian military. SPMAGTF-South is currently embarked aboard America on her maiden transit, “America Visits the Americas.” The ship is scheduled to be commissioned in San Francisco, Oct. 11.
