The Nineveh Mar Mattai monastery as it appears from the road nearly 3,000 feet below. Located 20 miles northeast of Nineveh Mar Mattai monastery is on top of the Maqlub Mountain known to Assyrians as Tura D'alpayeh and is the oldest Syrian Orthodox monastery in north east Mesopotamia, Jan. 12.
