Sgt. Michael Bell, a drill instructor for Platoon 3069, Mike Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, checks his recruits’ alignment during close-order drill practice July 9, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Drill instructors such as Bell, 27, from Trinity, Texas, spend four weeks attempting to refine basic movements and a sense of unity in recruits prior to being evaluated for the first time. Close-order drill helps transform recruits into Marines by developing teamwork and unit cohesion while instilling discipline by teaching habits of precision and immediate response to orders. Mike Company is scheduled to graduate Sept. 12, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
